Using Numerology to Help Foster Connections

We may worry about death but what hurts the soul most is to live without tasting the water of its own essence. -Rumi

In this column we will discuss "Connection" and the ways in which Numerology can help to foster connections. We'll be looking at connection as a real bond with another person. The bond doesn't have to be a romantic one, but one in which you both understand one another and try to continue to deepen and strengthen your relationship. It's about caring about the stability, growth and happiness of your friend, partner or lover. It's about listening to and supporting this significant person. Of course, this may look different to men and women. It may also look different as you mature in life.

There can be a few important challenges for you, if you want to experience true connection. One important challenge, for many of us is letting go of the past. Unless you are willing and able to work with, and eventually let go, of whatever may trouble you from the past, then your chances of developing strong and lasting connections may be limited. You may need to find outside help. You may need courage. Whatever you do, know that you are building support and safety for yourself by finding ways to manage past difficulties or trauma.

As you work with the past, you can begin to develop confidence and a belief in yourself. You'll be developing a lasting connection with yourself. As you do, you can pursue your desires and dreams in ways that simply weren't possible before. As you know your "inner dreams" are represented by your Soul Number in Numerology. We've talked about the Soul Number as it relates to relationships before. However, now as you look inside you'll now also be looking toward the myriad of connections outside. How do they support you? How do you support them?

This process is about balance, as first it requires that you have ways to support yourself. But, life is moving and we may miss opportunities to connect with others if we do not prepare ourselves. So caring about and listening to the call of your heart is vitally important. As you listen to your own needs, others will see that you don't just "pay lip service" to self-care. Then you'll be able to engage in a variety of healthy and supporting relationships.

Recently, I've been watching the TV series: Lost. I think it's a powerful example of connections. There have been several occasions in which some of the main characters have been gone for a period of time and then somehow are able to make it back to their "base camp." We see the core group joyously greet the people who are returning. They have not been stranded for very long, but they have developed intimate and close connections. However, some of the characters still maintain a sense of separateness and aloneness by choice. Even though it would seem like they would want all the friendship they could muster. Where do we turn away from friendships? Where do we miss an opportunity to express how much we care? How do we limit our chances for connection?

These are important questions to ask of yourself, as you develop ways to look at your "inner desires." You may want to look at them for yourself, as well as the questions below:

"What holds me back from achieving my passion?"

"What do I want in my life?"

"What am I afraid of?"

"What obstacles do I avoid?"

"What obstacles have I created?"

"What prevents me from developing a deeper connection with this person?"

There are many tools and techniques that can help you to document your inner dreams. We've talked about many of them that can help you to bring your desires into focus, and they can help you to develop a clear idea of where your heart is pulling you. It's then up to you to act.

One of the tools that I've been working with is the Enneagram. It's a personality system with nine points. I have come to see that my personality point in the Enneagram is 5. In brief, this point relates to observing before acting. It can also be about trying to be self-sufficient.  Yet, there is much more to this system than that. However, for me, I've discovered that I need to look to ways that I can share my desires and talents with others, rather than just listening. This also highlights the fact that connections are important. For all of us, including me, breaking away from the desire to simply observe or be self-sufficient can be a difficult task. The challenge to connect then focuses on being open for connection to happen.

Now within Numerology, people with a Soul Number of 4, 5, 7 and 9, may also need to make room in your lives to allow for connection to happen. These people have a stronger inward pull than the some of the others. For those people with a Soul Number of 4, they may need to learn to step past rigid rules and plans and allow life to happen. For those of you with a 5 or 7, you may need to find new ways that may be outside of learning or education, to meet and connect with others. For those with a 9, then you may need to balance your need for freedom with your need for connection. For many of us, connection may require that you find ways to let go of the need to know the outcome of every situation and take part in the mystery.

When you begin to value the needs of your heart and soul, you can begin to connect with your true self. Then you can begin to see how we are all connected, perhaps at first, in small but potentially significant ways.

Listening to your heart also brings importance and meaning into your life. Being aware of your dreams, desires and passions is only part of your inner work. Discovering meaning in your life is about looking for the unexpected. It's about connecting with and appreciating the world around us.

Are you listening to the call of your heart? Who knows how you're your interests, inner talents and powerful potential might impact the world? Whatever you do, know that we are all connected. It's really about sharing your interests with the people around you. Perhaps the neighbor down the hall is a jazz lover, but never knew you had a fascination with Miles Davis and wanted to learn how to play like him. Perhaps a friend of yours can teach you how to garden. Perhaps another friend teaches art appreciation. You never know. It's about sharing your talents and desires with others and allowing for new situations and connections to unfold.

Living in a connected way is about taking an active role within your life and bringing community, meaning and joy into your own life and the lives of others.

Good luck on your journey into Soulful Living and Numerology.
