Bedroom Over Garage

Dear Nancilee,

I have been searching for a cure for a bedroom situated above a garage. I’ve read it’s very bad feng shui and to avoid it completely, but have not found any advice on how to fix it. I’ve heard a ba gua mirror on the underside of the bed would help deflect the bad chi. Any other suggestions to fix my bedroom over a garage?

Thank you,
Sharen

Dear Sharen,

I can imagine how difficult it is to read about a bad situation and not find the cure for it. In Pyramid Feng Shui we look at the reasons behind why a situation could be negative and seek solutions for them that are directly related to the problem.

In our culture, we use garages as storage areas for all kinds of "stuff". Unfortunately much of these materials emit toxic emissions that find their way into adjacent rooms via the ventilation system. Since you spend 6-8 uninterrupted hours in a bedroom and even when no additional toxic materials are stored there, such as paints, household solvents, etc, the automobile’s discharge is harmful. First and foremost remove or re-vent the air from the garage into the bedroom.

Secondly, on a deeply physiological level, we need to feel protected and safe in order to deeply rest. Subconsciously a garage translates to an end of a street. Living with a street running underneath a bedroom does nothing to bolster a sense of groundedness and safety.

If relocating the bedroom is not possible then adjust the garage’s ambiance so that it feels as if it has another purpose. I often suggest to clients to treat the door from the garage into the house in the same way as they would their home’s main entrance. Painting the walls a color or faux painting a scene can be transforming. Also building a storage closet for fun equipment (golf, tennis, etc) or to stash gifts will alter atmosphere. Use determines our connection to a space and after the toxins are removed adding another use is appropriate as a cure for a bedroom being positioned above.

If none of the above is possible because you are renting, then adding another layer of flooring (carpeting preferable) under the bed to increase the bulk between you and the garage is an another feng shui solution.

Now sleep tight and stop worrying.

Best,
Nancilee Wydra
