The Role of Coincidences... and How
They Help to Improve Our Daily Life

by Patricia Rose Upczak

The vastness of the Universe is beyond our comprehension. We live in a vibrant, alive, conscious, spiritual essence that whispers to us constantly at many levels. These whisperings can be dreams, animals or birds crossing our paths, recurring numbers, and meaningful coincidences, of all types, that defy explanation.

Synchronicity, Signs and Symbols

When you put a question or concern to the Universe, people who cross your path will often have a sign, message, or some significance for you. A good example of the interconnectedness of our world is the following story. His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day while trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby bog. He dropped his tools and ran to the bog. There mired to his waist in black muck was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what could have been a slow and horrible death. The next day, a fancy carriage drove up to the Scotsman's sparse surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved. "I want to repay you," said the nobleman. "You saved my son's life." "No, I can't accept payment for what I did," the Scottish farmer replied. At that moment, the farmer's own son came to the door of the family hovel. "Is that your son?" the nobleman asked. "Yes," replied the farmer proudly. "I'll make you a deal. Let me provide him with the level of education my son will enjoy. If the lad is anything like his father, he'll grow to be a man we both will be proud of." And he did.

Farmer Flemings’ son attended the very best schools and graduated from Medical school in London. He became known throughout the world as Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin. Years later, the same nobleman's son who was saved from the bog was stricken with pneumonia. What saved his life this time? Penicillin. The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill. His son's name? Sir Winston Churchill.

According to Frank Joseph, author of SYNCHRONICITY AND YOU, "synchronicities are little miracles through which an otherwise Unseen Consciousness communicates with us. We may speak to the gods in prayer, but significant coincidence is the medium whereby they speak to us."

Synchronicity shows up in your life and has patterns in single incidence, strings, and clusters. People most often experience synchronicity when they are open and aware, which in turn is affected by the outer conditions in which they might put themselves.

Special circumstances such as death, birth and times of crisis or upheaval are outer conditions that push us towards openness, because when life becomes unpredictable we feel more vulnerable. Turning points, personal crisis, falling in or out of love, rescues from danger, travel, and past life experiences are times when worries of daily life recede as we are drawn into the currents of a larger existence.

Joseph Campbell describes the miracle of what he called "the helping hands" phenomenon in his book The Power of Myth. The basic concept is that when we ask God for help, all of a sudden people and opportunities show up out of the blue to help us accomplish what we are trying to do.

I believe that synchronistic experiences point to a profound relationship or interconnection between all parts of the Universe. These experiences surprise and confound the purely rational mind, because most people do not have a framework for random happenings that seem to fit our needs beyond coincidences. The Universe does provide us with the tools to follow our destiny. All we have to do is ask, and then PAY ATTENTION!
