Reverend Laurie Sue Brockway, The Romance Reverend

Living Soulfully
by Rev. Laurie Sue Brockway

To me, living soulfully means engaging fully in life and all that life asks and demands of us -- including the stuff we would rather not have to deal with -- and engaging as fully in that which is sacred ... spiritual ... nourishing to the soul.

A Goddess is a Girl's Best Friend by Rev. Laurie Sue Brockway

We’ve all heard it before but I will say it again. Mundane tasks completed with love and intention are as holy as any religious experience. For example, my living room is filled with beautiful Goddess icons from the world’s traditions and it is a wonderfully calming and visually appeasing place. But it sure does get dusty … I find that if I take on the dusting and the caring for the Goddesses with the spirit of the priestess in a temple, cleaning the room and dusting is an honor … and a soulful experience. It is as fulfilling as sitting there in prayer and contemplation. Knowing that both experiences and everything in between are equally as sacred is, to me, living soulfully, because in each scenario I feel a sense of aliveness, awareness and connection.

Soulful means we are fully alive, because we are experiencing life -- not just marching through it -- and it means we are connected to "all that is" while we are expressing ourselves in daily life. When we realize there is no separation between our day-to-day lives and our soul, then we live soulfully.

Some of us mistake "living soulfully" for avoiding pain, and "real life" or "being spiritual instead of practical or emotional." But none of us are exempt from difficulties in life. Soulful is dealing with them, not ducking them. Psychotherapists call it "spiritual override" when we do a lot of spiritual work without having completed the necessary growth steps to ground the emotional life.

Living soulfully is more than just being a spiritual person. I think it is a matter of blending ALL aspects of life, and dealing with all aspects of life, yet living from a perspective or point of view that is essentially "soulful." When in touch with the needs and abilities of our own soul, life is a much more interesting, healing and fulfilling journey.
